What is the WNBA?

The Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) is the only women's professional basketball league in the world. Established in 1997, the WNBA is the most visible and successful women's professional sports league in the world.

WNBA Rules and Regulations

The WNBA follows the official rules and regulations set by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). However, there are some minor differences between the WNBA and FIBA rules, such as:

  • The WNBA uses a smaller basketball than FIBA (28.5 inches vs. 29.5 inches).
  • The WNBA has a shorter shot clock (24 seconds vs. 30 seconds).
  • The WNBA has a narrower three-point line (20 feet, 9 inches vs. 22 feet, 1.75 inches).

WNBA Teams and Cities

The WNBA currently consists of 12 teams, located in cities across the United States. The teams are divided into two conferences, the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference. The Eastern Conference consists of the New York Liberty, Chicago Sky, Dallas Wings, Washington Mystics, Atlanta Dream, and Indiana Fever. The Western Conference consists of the Seattle Storm, Las Vegas Aces, Phoenix Mercury, Minnesota Lynx, Los Angeles Sparks, and Denver Nuggets.

WNBA Players and Salaries

Some of the most famous WNBA players include Candace Parker, Brittney Griner, and Diana Taurasi. The average salary for a WNBA player is $100,000 per year. However, top players can earn up to $250,000 per year.

WNBA Championships

The WNBA championship is awarded to the team that wins the Finals, a best-of-five series. The Finals are held in September and October. The Seattle Storm are the current WNBA champions, having won the title in 2020, 2018, and 2010.
