Kamala Harris: First Woman, Black, and Asian American Vice President

Early Life and Career

Kamala Devi Harris was born on October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California. She graduated from Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Harris began her legal career as a deputy district attorney in Alameda County, California, and later became the district attorney of San Francisco.

In 2010, Harris was elected as California's attorney general, becoming the first woman and the first African American to hold the position. As attorney general, she established the Bureau of Children's Justice and fought against human trafficking.

U.S. Senate

In 2016, Harris was elected to the U.S. Senate, becoming the second African American woman to serve in the Senate. In the Senate, she served on the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, the Judiciary Committee, and the Intelligence Committee.

Vice Presidency

In 2020, Harris was selected as the running mate of Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. Biden and Harris won the election, and Harris was sworn in as vice president on January 20, 2021.
