Buck-Boost Transformers: An Overview
What is a Buck-Boost Transformer?
A buck-boost transformer is a type of transformer that can both increase (boost) and decrease (buck) the voltage of an AC power supply. This makes them ideal for a variety of applications, including power conversion, voltage regulation, and isolation.
How Do Buck-Boost Transformers Work?
Buck-boost transformers work by using two windings, a primary winding and a secondary winding. The primary winding is connected to the AC power source, and the secondary winding is connected to the load. The ratio of the number of turns on the primary winding to the number of turns on the secondary winding determines the output voltage.
Types of Buck-Boost Transformers
There are two main types of buck-boost transformers: autotransformers and isolated transformers. Autotransformers have a single winding that serves as both the primary and secondary winding. This makes them more efficient than isolated transformers, but it also means that the input and output voltages are not isolated from each other.
Isolated transformers have two separate windings, which are isolated from each other by a layer of insulation. This provides electrical isolation between the input and output voltages, making them ideal for applications where safety is a concern.
